The long-running grass-roots effort to turn the corner of the Northwood Community Park into a military memorial reached fruition on Tuesday night, with Irvine leaders approving a permanent Northwood Gratitude and Honor memorial.

The Irvine City Council unanimously agreed to make the makeshift memorial a permanent fixture at Northwood Community Park, ending a lengthy debate and earning the applause of dozens of neighbors who have spent years overseeing the community-driven project.
