The Irvine City Council unanimously agreed to make the makeshift memorial a permanent fixture at Northwood Community Park, ending a lengthy debate and earning the applause of dozens of neighbors who have spent years overseeing the community-driven project.
The $210,000 memorial will include a new monument sign and plaque, a lighted flagpole, a paved walkway, three seat walls, and five pedestals bearing granite panels inscribed with the names of fallen service members from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
